Renada (Kraus) Krauss Family

Renada (Kraus) Krauss Family 31 This chapter summarizes what is known about Renada (Kraus) Krauss. Who Renada (Kraus) Krauss was the wife of George Krauss and (half?) sister of Barbara (Kraus) Kirmse (See Chapter: Barbara (Kraus) Kirmse (1842 – 1920)). Census Records Most of the timeline information found for Renada comes from the census records. (See Chapter: Census Records – George and Renada (Kraus) Krauss) Marriage In the 1900 US Census, Renada and George were married for 35 years – about 1865. In the 1910 US Census, they were married for 44 years – about 1866. So, from the census records, Renada and George married about 1865-1866 (See Chapter: Census Records – George and Renada (Kraus) Krauss). Their first daughter, Johanna, was 7 in the 1870 US Census so was born about 1863. In the 1876 Missouri Census she was 12 so was born about 1864; In the 1880 US Census she was 16 so was born about 1864. Hence from the census reports, Johanna was born about 1863-1864. From the above, Johanna was born a year or so before Renada and George were married. This raises the question of did Renada have Johanna out of wedlock or was Renada previously married and George was her second husband? Their second daughter, Catherine, was born 11 Aug 1866 according to her gravestone which is consistent with being born about 3 years after Johanna as given in the census records, Immigration The Passenger Manifest for the SS Western Metropolis shows that they arrived New York Harbor on 11 Jun 1867 (See Chapter: George and Renada (Kraus) Krauss Immigration). Family Death Records Death Notice Information Source Publisher unknown and date hand written as 1910. Loose leaf notebook of obituaries/death notices, Perry County Historical Society, Perryville, MO. Grave Not Found Helen (Kirmse) Hacker attempted unsuccessfully to find Renada’s grave as described in an excerpt of a letter that she wrote to Norma (Kirmse) Rauh. Discussion Husband Renada’s husband, George Krauss, was a wagon maker and then became an undertaker (See Chapter: George Krauss – Undertaker). Kraus vs Krauss vs Krause The spelling of Renada’s last name varies in available documents. Her maiden name was Kraus and her married name was Krauss ( (See Chapter: George Krauss – Undertaker). Some documents such as the census records give her last name as Krause but this is incorrect. Future Research From the above, it is believed that Renada Kraus was born on 6 Apr 1836 in/near Hutschdorf, Bayern/Bavaria. Her father was believed to be Jopst Kraus. She married George Krauss about 1865 and had two daughters before immigrating to Perry County, Missouri, USA. To verify this, the Huts
