Retired Slippery Rock professor killed in freak accident at sandwich shop
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. —
Glen Brunken, 69, suffers neck injury after falling through glass doorA retired Slippery Rock University professor has died after an apparent freak accident in which he fell through a glass door at a sandwich shop and cut his neck.
Glen Brunken, who used a cane to walk, was at Bob’s Sub & Sandwich Shop on South Main Street about noon Monday when he apparently tripped and went head-first through the glass door.
“There was blood everywhere all over the sidewalk and then I saw — looked to be a cane,” said resident Amy Nevel, who lives near the sandwich shop.
He was semi-conscious when paramedics arrived at the store, officials said. Brunken, 69, was taken to nearby Grove City Medical Center, and later flown to UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh, where he was pronounced dead.
Slippery Rock University officials confirmed to Channel 4 Action News’ Andrew Del Greco that Brunken taught art at the school for 40 years, beginning in 1969 until he retired in 2009.
“It’s terrible that he’s so young, 69 is really not that old,” said Slippery Rock student James Stevens.
“I knew him in college as a great guy, he always talked to people, he was very friendly, and helped people out whenever they needed it,” said Slippery Rock resident Bill Sonntag.
“You never know when it’s your time,” said Nevel.
It was not immediately known how or why Brunken tripped. The incident is under investigation.

Laminated or tempered glass is safer because it “fractures into small relatively harmless cubes that are less likely to cause significant injury,” the complaint adds.
Cynthia Brunken sued Bob’s Sub and Sandwich Shop, located in Slippery Rock Commons, and its owner Cindy Marlowe for wrongful death.
Marlowe declined to comment about the lawsuit.
The complaint claims that Marlowe knew the glass doors were unsa
