Matinee. American Repertory Theatre, Cambridge. Translated by Stephen Berg and Diskin Clay. Directed by Robert Woodruff.
[I have gotten behind on my chronicle of theatregoing and am catching up with these brief notices.]
A strong, powerful performance of the play’s chief character by John Campion. Thomas Darrah as the chorus leader, and Stephanie Roth-Haberle as an amazing Jocasta, whose mask-like smile and frenetic movements simultaneously hid and gave away her dreadful surmise of the true identity of her husband. High-decibel body miking was distracting, as was the overly loud music — do they think the entire audience is hard of hearing?
