I want to strip double quotes from:

string = '"" " " ""\\1" " "" ""'

to obtain:

string = '" " " ""\\1" " "" "'

I tried to use rstrip, lstrip and strip('[^\"]|[\"$]') but it did not work.

How can I do this?
