A coworker claimed recently in a code review that the [[ ]] construct is to be preferred over [ ] in constructs like

if [ "`id -nu`" = "$someuser" ] ; then
     echo "I love you madly, $someuser"
fi

He couldn't provide a rationale. Is there one?
