Why is *&x not the same as x?

Short version:

The following code doesn't compile:

CComBSTR temp;
CMenu().GetMenuString(0,   temp, 0);

but this does:

CComBSTR temp;
CMenu().GetMenuString(0, *&temp, 0);

Why?
