Remixing Gendered Ads

Remixing Gendered Ads If you have not already delivered the unit Remixing Media, deliver the chapter What is a Remix?, and What is a Critical Remix? Next, have students access the student chapter Remixing Gendered Ads. Have students find an ad that they can identify as being aimed either at boys or girls. You can have them work individually, in pairs or in groups as you prefer. You can allow students to choose ads in any format or medium, or specify a format or medium that they should use. If students are using existing media for their remix, deliver the chapter What is Legal and Ethical in Remixing? (if you have not already) and have students access the student chapter Remix Tools: Getting Media. Next, have students use the assignment sheet analyze the ways in which the ad is aimed at that gender and what messages it sends about gender. Students should choose between: - creating a version of the ad that is aimed at a different gender - creating a version of the ad that is one that does not have any gendered elements, or - creating a version of the ad that is aimed at the same gender but has more positive messages about masculinity or femininity. Use the Assessment Rubric to assess students’ work.
